Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
