Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
