This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
