Gas Detonation Claims Three Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The detonation took place as police and firefighters entered the house close to the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female got detained at the location and one more individual who escaped following the blast was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been taken to hospital.
The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area displayed the property reduced to a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the property was facing an court order due to debts incurred by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander informed news outlets.
A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
He was convinced the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had died in the line of duty.
