Apex Legends' Niche Movement Mechanics Are Going Mainstream During This Update

The game developers has an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale players, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on November 4th.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Named "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a burst of propulsion when climbing over ledges and walls. As explained lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting has unofficially been a feature of the game for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." However it's challenging for casual gamers, and typically employed by pro gamers in competitive play or tournaments. This season, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to successfully perform these tricky speed-boosts.

"This technique have been in Apex for a while, but executing it requires skill to pull off and a player might not realize it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so users can easily see the timing to trigger the fast-paced movement ability, opening up the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to play for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

Why make a previously obscure technique available to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan explains the team aims for players to experience empowerment — even those who are new.

"Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, looked at what the community are doing, and we wondered, 'How can we extend some of this power to more players?'" the designer explains. "Since currently, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to use — it requires to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. So we said, 'What if we make a more official version?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant all getting enhancements to help keep them mobile. Recovery time on her tactical ability has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will boost players into the air much quicker than it used to. Her defensive walls now include overhead protection and capability to grant movement bonuses to allies in range. But it's aerial Valkyrie receiving significant improvements now, with multiple tweaks applied to make her more potent, quicker, and deadlier.

"I think there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time has arrived," says Legend designer the designer. "There's no doubt she was dominant previously, but due to the addition of other characters, mobility perks, and Evac Towers, it seemed like she fell behind in current Apex. It was an ideal chance for us to revisit multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to former prominence."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To reclaim her competitive status in current strategies, the developer notes Respawn evaluated all her skills and implemented significant changes. Her jetpack have been upgraded, increasing her speed while airborne, and this equipment now recharge much quicker, allowing the player to remain longer aloft. Now she won't take damage from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to mark enemies who are hit from it. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches her entire squad skyward for redeployment or retreat — requires much less time to fire up. Additionally, she gains some new perk choices that players can select to conserve resources, expand the spread of her rockets, or further speed up her Skyward Dive activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," he comments.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's only floating arena, Olympus, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that opens up bottlenecks and renders claiming the high ground more manageable. Respawn state Apex Legends this update focuses on providing gamers the resources required to keep up with matches.

"Essentially, we examined the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," explains lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.
